An imagining of Anna on Easter, with inspiration from Luke 24
This morning we’ve awakened to the most amazing news. Some of the women who went to Jesus’ tomb saw him alive! The news is spreading like wildfire and everyone has an opinion. I pointed out that we know Jesus can bring people back from the dead, but Abba insisted that he didn’t think this was quite the same thing. Then Mama reminded me that the household needed water and could I at least finish my chores.
It was on my third trip from the well that I noticed him walking along beside me. I guess I was sort of dragging a bit because he offered to carry my bucket for me. I should have thought that was odd enough, but I was tired so I said, “Thank you, maybe just for a little while.”
“You seem tired,” he noticed.
I retorted, “No one’s been sleeping since the Passover began. And now, we hear the news that Jesus is maybe alive, and no one knows what to think.”
“Speaking of the Passover, what do you think it was like for our ancestors the morning they could hear Egyptian chariots heading toward their camp? They could see plainly that Moses had led them right up to the sea. There was no way to escape their enemies.”
“But then God parted the sea and they all did escape!” I was thinking, everyone knows that story.
“Yes, but before that miracle happened, could you blame them for their fear and anger? Not even Moses knew the way that God would save them.”
“No, I guess not,” I admitted.
“Do you think, maybe, what happened to Jesus makes people feel the same way those Israelites did?”
“You mean how we all thought Jesus was the Messiah, but he died before he could save us.”
“Except that when he died, he did save you, and now he’s alive again to show you that it worked. It’s just happening in a way you didn’t expect – just like the parting of the sea.”
“I’m not sure I understand,” I paused and looked up at him.
“But you will,” he said as he held the bucket out to me to take.
Then, he smiled and I knew – and I ran into His arms.
