While looking for inspiration this week I decided to open the Bible randomly and see what turned up. I came to Psalm 77:11-12 (The Message):
Once again I’ll go over what God has done,
Lay out on the table the ancient wonders;
I’ll ponder all the things you’ve accomplished,
And give a long, loving look at your acts.
Of course, I could have found a similar refrain anywhere throughout the Old Testament. Israel knew the Lord had parted the Red Sea, given them manna and water in the desert, and delivered them to the Promised Land. In times of trouble, doubt, fear, despair – the reminder of God’s miraculous rescues became a litany that Israel could repeat to reinvigorate her faith.
What was good for Israel works for us as well. The difference remains that for us the litany must reflect the saving acts that God has done in our individual lives.
This requires doing some digging. What events in my life stand out as times when I knew for sure that the Lord had my back? How did they change my perspective and mercifully allow me keep treading the road of life instead of death?
These turning points are the artifacts of our faith – the evidence that has convinced us to call the Lord our God. Equally, they stand as proof of how much God loves us.
How wonderful if we could construct this litany – this personal creed – to keep on the tip of our tongue ready to bring our faith alive when we face life’s hurdles?
