As a little girl, I liked the idea of “spring cleaning.” It was so satisfying to spend time organizing my room or closet and getting all my possessions neatly arranged.
Throughout my adulthood, I’ve been able to revisit that sense of accomplishment from time to time by waiting for the “spirit” to motivate me. It’s great to wake up one morning and realize today I want to clean out the desk, or pantry, or storage area.
Then there are the times when it’s the spirit of necessity that drives me. Think about getting new furniture, adding on to the house, moving – or when your laptop crashes as mine did a little more than a week ago. This latter case is definitely not as much fun. But, it can still bring its own rewards.
Life is a great natural teacher. It’s not as if I had no backup for the work on my computer, but I clearly wasn’t as careful about preserving my files as I will be in the future. While I didn’t love the tedium of copying and pasting my posts from this blog back into my Blog document, it has forced me to review what I’ve written these past almost two years and to some extent, take stock of where I’ve been and where I want to go.
This week I’ll be at Princeton Theological Seminary attending a writing workshop. I’m hoping to glean some new ideas for this blog and my website. Perhaps this computer “spring cleaning” will actually serve to make me more receptive to what I learn there.
In any event, it’s great to realize that that no matter what happens to us in life, from little mishaps to great tragedies, God has a way to use it all.
