Sometimes, when I’m looking at a particularly beautiful sight in nature, whether in person, or in a photo, I shake my head and think, “How can someone see this and not think God is for real?” For me, the world of nature affords such majesty of beauty and variety and surprise it seems to shout, “I AM” aloud.
Yet, I accept that God, on principle, refuses to compel belief. It is an important component of the Lord’s relationship with us that God makes room for the questions of our intellect. Why would God want our understanding of the Deity to be clouded with superstition and befuddlement? Surely the Lord welcomes our explorations into science and history and archeology and all fields of academic study. God is Truth. Anyone who seeks what is real and true will be tracking the path to God whether he or she knows it or not.
The complexity of the world invites our curiosity. That humans, over time and through careful study, have learned so much about how nature behaves demonstrates God’s openness to our explorations. The Lord’s willingness to make the divine “secrets” penetrable to the human mind has encouraged us to keep broadening the quality and quantity of human lives.
Of course, there’s so much we don’t know. Much of what diminishes the good of this world comes from our failing to be persistent with the growth of our hearts in combination with our heads.
Just like the beauty in nature, God’s ways are available to our perception if we take the time to seek them out. But the Lord does not insist on universal acknowledgment of the divine. In respect to our wills, the Almighty withholds the divine signature from His magnificent works until we have eyes to see and ears to hear. How amazing that One so great is also so humble.
